outlook downloading messages when closed

Okay, this is going to sound crazy but I'm pretty sure of it. Over
the past couple of days, Outlook 2000 has started downloading e-mail
messages from my internet e-mail service even when Outlook is *not
open* on my desktop. Haven't used the machine for a couple of days
and haven't changed setting. Checked when I sat down at the machine
-- Outlook was not running. Yet it had gone out & got e-mails off my
server. WTF???

It may not be open on your desktop, but it hasnt closed fully
Ctrl+Alt+Del and check running processess for outlook.exe

Next time it happens, pull up the task list (control-shift-escape) and check
processes to ensure that outlook.exe is not actually running. I'll wager it
is actually running. As for why you can't see it on the desktop, something
is probably holding it open and it managed to maintain enough functionality
to be downloading messages.
