Question on DNS and DHCP

Hello,

I will like to setup a domain controller(active directory) and dns
server. For this to work, is it necessary to setup the server to be a
dhcp server as well? Can i set the router to be the dhcp server
instead?

And also, what is the difference between a domain controller and a
dns server?

no the server doesn't need to be the dhcp server, you can get dhcp from
anywhere

dns only resolves names to ip address, a domain controler holds the active
directory data

However, in an AD infrastructure one would rather use Windows DHCP and not a
router's or 3rd party DHCP unless it supports Option 081, which stipulates
DNS Dynamic Updates for your DHCP clients to get registered into DNS,
besides the ability to support Option 044 and 046 (WINS Options), and Option
015 (DNS Connection Specific Suffix).
