Question On Disk Defrag

Hachet

I have an external, 500gb HD. I did the "analyze" using defrag and there
is at least half the disk showing free space at the beginning of the
drive.
Would there be any benefit to putting the contiguous files at the beginning
of the drive and the free space at the end ?? Thank you.

The world will come to an end before this discussion ends. :)

IMHO, as long as the files are defragged it doesn't make much difference
where they are located. Its the hunt and peck of the heads that takes
time reading a file. But most defraggers won't defrag without moving
to the beginning.

I suppose I should have asked that question also. I've defragged the drive,
using the Win defrag, and the free space still stays at the beginning.
Any suggestions or is it no biggie ??

Before and after tests will show if this location is important.

You could try UltimateDefrag freeware edition;
http://www.download.com/UltimateDefrag-Freeware-Edition/3000-2094_4-10582157.html

There is also a UltimateDefrag 2008 version.
(not freeware, but does have a fully functional trial period)

I have not used this product so no recommendations one way or the other.

I lean more toward the files up front, but only the important files.
What I use is Norton's Speed Disk, which lets me arrange
the files on the disk. How much does this help,
some but not as much as a periodic defrag no matter what
defrag software you use.

That doesn't mean it's not fragmented, just that the data is all located
in that area. What does Analyze say about it? If it's not badly
fragmented, don't worry about it. If it is, well, defrag it.

Don't worry about it then. Assuming defrag worked?
You will need to consult the log file and the very small progress bar to
determine how well defrag worked.

I don't think so. What is the file format?
Here is a defrag that will give you those warm and fuzzy feelings after use
(It's what I use)
