I do not buy the suites like NIS or others, I just buy the Antivirus
products of Symantec, and before them Norton. I've been working with
computers since 76, and using Norton since it came out and the Symantec
Corporate version since it came out - not one of my system or any of our
clients system has been compromised in all that time. Yes, I know that
NAV/Sym were not available in 76, but it was to give you an idea how long
I've been doing this.

I've seen Sororities where they used McAfee adn PC-Cillian and CA and
several others - all of those machines were compromised. In the same
settings, where users had not let their NAV subscriptions expire, not one
of their computers was compromised.

Have used McAfee since its inception and have never been compromised.. I do
know of Norton users that have though..

I have used both for years, and would recommend either one. If you are
interested primarily in a standalone program, I would go with Trend Micro.
If you want an internet security suite, then go with Symatec (the antivirus
program is part of Norton Internet Security).

Other than it doesn't work very well? It was recently rated 11th out of 13
tested A/V programs by a German test lab.

#1 was Norton Antivirus; despite posts to the contrary I have used it for
years in both home and business environments and I have yet to see a single
machine infected with any virus as long as NAV is kept updated and
maintained.

McAfee was at one time a very good product, but has fallen dramatically in
the last couple of years.

My $.02 is stick with a known reputable product (NAV). There is a reason it
has been the #1 selling AV product for 9 years running...

Ken, didn't you and some others a few threads back trash ANYTHING Norton and
now you are recommending it. What's the deal?

I have read opinions over the years and accounts on just about every AV
software that hs seen compromised systems with ANY antivirus solution. I
personally have seen McAfee fail to catch when Symantec did. I have also
seen 0-day viruses get past Symantec (only once so far - but once just means
it can happen.) I have send Trend Micro beat others with newer virus
definitions, but I can say that about each of the different antivirus
providers.

I have a list I recommend - if this is for personal use I recommend trying a
few and seeing which one you like best.

Symantec (Norton) AntiVirus (~$11 and up)

Kaspersky Anti-Virus (~$49.95 and up)

Panda Antivirus Titanium (~$39.95 and up)

(Free Online Scanner: http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/)

AVG Anti-Virus System (Free and up)
http://www.grisoft.com/

McAfee VirusScan (~$11 and up)
http://www.mcafee.com/

AntiVir (Free and up)
http://www.free-av.com/

avast! (Free and up)
http://www.avast.com/

Trend Micro (~$49.95 and up)

(Free Online Scanner:

RAV AntiVirus Online Virus Scan (Free!)

Bonnie, whatever AV program you decide on stay away from the bundled
suites, such as NIS, from any of the vendors. Use the standalone AV
product.

McAfee was at one time a very good product, but has fallen dramatically in
the last couple of years.

The problem with McAfee is that if you don't pay attention and register
it, you don't get any virus updates at all - Almost every computer I've
seen with McAfee was running unregistered and didn't fetch updates
automatically - Norton does.

Those sororities were using penicillin not PC-Cillin.

Yea, I caught myself once about to say the girls were infected with more
than 800 viruses and 3000+ spyware apps - that would not have gone over
well I imagine.

The funny thing was the the girls moving from the EDU's Dorms to the house
were the most infected of any, seems that there is nothing to protect
anyone inside a large campus.

It was interesting to see that one PC was completely secure was running
FireFox and ThunderBird and had File/Printer sharing disabled and that the
mother provided a Linksys router for her daughters PC.

I'll stick with Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition - I've seen it stop
scripting exploits from web pages before McAfee or Trend even knew what
scripting was.

Just don't get too comfortable with any single product. I don't want
to get off on another Symantec rant. But I thought it was a good
product. I've seen it miss viruses in Outlook Pst modules. It also
doesn't seem to catch some of the Java cache pests as well. Even
though I've moved to eTrust, I still run some of the other vendor on
line scans to double-check.
Recently, I've migrated a number of customers to eTrust or even
AVG/AVast for cost reasons and in many of those cases the first full
system scans found infections that NAV did not.
As to McAfee - I worked in an Enterprise where McAfee was the
Antivirus software. It was a nightmare. The only AntiVirus software I
ever saw that created more issues than it ever solved.
No matter what you use, I would recommend taking 30 minutes or
so to run both Panda & TrendMicro's on line scans. You might be
surprised at your results.

I guess the point of all this to point out that product allegiance is O.K,
up to a point. Never assume that Good Ole 'Fill-in-the-Blank' is your
best choice/option.
