Question marks on web-site page, none on my machine when composin.

I am modifying an existing web page (I did not construct it). The page shows
question marks where it looks like spaces or tabs should be. I do not see
the marks in Page View or in Preview on my machine. Any clues?

I am not conversant with the code, so when I look at it to see what I can
see, it is all gibberish!

Check the head of the document for the encoding type. Encoding types
tell the browser which language character set to use. If the encoding
type used is one you don't have characters installed for on your
machine, you will see question marks or other characters used as
substitutes for the missing ones. Here's some additional information:
