question about XP SP2 hotfixes

G

Gary Massengale

We are having a problem opening an adobe document from one companies website
after applying windows updates. It is only with this company, so we sent
them a list of the hotfixes on the PC in question. When they saw

Windows xp hotfix (sp2)[see q329115 for more information]

they told us we must have XP service pack 2 installed, and it is only in
beta, and that could be our problem. There were several hotfixes that were
sp2.
My understanding of the beta is that is for msdn people only, and we have
no way of downloading that.

Is the hotfix in question related to XP service pack 2? Does this mean we
have somehow downloaded XP service pack 2?

Typical tech support answer -- blame anyone else.

MS adds "sp2" to its post-sp1 hotfixes to indicate that these patches are
candidates for inclusion in sp2 (which is now predicted to be available to the
public sometime before this July). Your understanding about the beta status of
sp2 is correct. Although there are "unofficial" versions of the sp2 beta
available at various non-MS sites, you'd know if you had installed one of
these. To set your mind at rest, Start > Run winver

Can you open the pdf in question from any other PC?

Yes we can open it up from other PCs. Actually we can open adobe documents
on the PC in question, just not from this one particular companies website.
You can go to other websites and open an adobe document in the IE browser no
problem. Thanks for the info, it really helps.
I can at least tell them we do not have SP2 on the PC.

YW. Check to see if you have the same version of Acrobat Reader on the problem
PC as on the others. Even if it is the same version, you could try uninstalling
and reinstalling Acrobat Reader, and see if that helps any.

Most of the individual Hotfixes that have been put out since SP1 came
out are described as SP2 - meaning effectively 'candidate to go into
SP2'. As most of the ones that came out early in XP's life were called
SP1. Seeing that does not mean the beta SP2 is installed, and the
people you are talking to ought to know it
