Question about upgrading

Hi everyone...
I want to upgrade my processor, but do not know anything about it. I know
that my computer takes awhile to load programs and start up. Here is what I
have:
Compaq Presario 5310
Windows XP SP1
Intel Celeron CPU
1200MHz
1.20 GHz
256MB of RAM
I hope that is enough info. Not sure what all you need. What I am looking
for is advice on whether it would do any good to upgrade and if so, what
type of processor I would need and how difficult it would be to change them
out. I have visited the Compaq(HP) site and only found info on buying new
computers or troubleshooting.
Thank you for any and all information.

In loading and starting up, processor speed is but one element. Your PC
has plenty of muscle. A more likely cause of sluggishness is poor PC
maintenance: covert 'intruder' programs, old files, fragmented hard disk, etc.

Take the box to a competent PC technician, at a shop that builds PCs. Or
have an experienced friend help you do typical cleaning chores.

If you had a 300 celeron with 64MB of ram you might have a weak machine. Do
a disk cleanup , then defrag. Go to run and type ; msconfig. Go to the
startup tab and remove " third party" programs that you do not need to start
when the computer starts. Reboot. I bet you that the startup time will be
much faster and loading of programs will be much quicker. Jym

Hi. Thanks for your suggestions. I already perform maintainance on my PC
such as daily disc clean up, which I believe removes the temp files
also(not sure on this one but have been told that it does), weekly defrag,
and I run ad-aware twice a week, and weekly virus and trojan scans with an
up-to-date antivirus. I have both AVG and Norton installed. I also do
periodic scandisc. I go thru my windows explorer once in awhile just to
see what's in there.
What else would your recommend?
Thanks

I would uninstall Norton if you are already running AVG. IMO, AVG is as
good or better than NAV, and NAV/NSW is much more of a resource hog. You
may even see an increase in performance just by doing that. After
uninstalling Norton, go into regedit and do a search for "Norton" and
"Symantec" and delete all those entries. There are other entries that
Norton has in the registry, but unless you know what you are doing and
what the names of the entries are, you could have some problems. It will
take a little while and you will see just how much NAV (and even worse
NSW) likes to take over.
