Question about sharing files on a network. Can users write over each other?

All the users have XP and Office. What keeps them from having the
same document open and writing over each other? If the first one
opens it does that make other uses read only in XP? Sorry, didn't
know where to post this.

Thank you for any help.
 
First user that opens it , has read and write privledges, next user has read
only
if opened at the same time, you can change this within application.
 
Try the Office group, but anyway the first one to open gets to edit, the
others get forced to "read-only". Pretty simple, but effective.
