Question about not being able to View messages and Attachments

S

Scott Mullen

I have a PC running the 64 Bit Vista and Windows Mail 6.x all the latest
patches...

I've always been able to download all my mail from Yahoo and Gmails POP mail
servers just fine and I've always been able to click on each message and in a
few seconds I'd be able to read it in the bottom pane...

I must have inadvertently clicked on something and now when I click on a
message, een just a plain old test message it does not show up in the preview
pane anymore... There is a paperclip icon over on the right and when you
click on it to see the attachment, one looks like a Notepad/textfile, but it
will not open...

Previous to whatever I did, the test/message would have been displayed in
the bottom pane...

What the heck do I do to get this back???

I do not want to re-install my OS and all my APPs to get this to work right
again...

Is the preview pane even present? If not: View, Layout, Show preview pane.

What happens when you double-click on a message?

1st thanks for the reply...

Yes the preview pane is present and looks just like it always did, just
noting shows up in it...

If I double click on a message, it opens it like it normally would, but the
message or what should be appearing in a message body is not there...

What should be there, gets somehow put into an attachment (over on the
right/Paperclip)... Which won't open, but I think I can save to the Hard
Drive...

I would attach a few screen shots, but I don't think I can with this...

Hi, Scott.
If I double click on a message, it opens it like it normally would, but
the
message or what should be appearing in a message body is not there...

All messages? Or just some? Some legitimate emailers - and many malware
distributors - like to send an email that is blank except for the
attachment. We see such messages here in the newsgroups now and then.
Malware spreaders hope we'll click to open the attachment and receive their
malicious payload. Friends just think such messages are cute; many are
multi-layer Forwards from AOL or other newbies to "everyone you know".
Usually, even after we drill down through the many layers, we find a joke or
an inspirational message or a political diatribe.

One way that often lets us read the contents without actually opening the
attachments is to highlight the message and press <Ctrl>+<F3>. This should
pop up a window that starts with the message headers - which look like
gibberish to the uninitiated - and then the text of the message. If the
message is all plain text it should be clearly readable. If it is HTML
text, it MIGHT be readable. If it is a big block of apparently meaningless
letters and numbers, it could be an innocent picture - or a virus or other
malware. :>(

Check your settings in Tools | Safety options. I'm running WLM in Win7RC
now and have forgotten what options are available in WM, but you may have
inadvertently changed one of those.

Gary's suggestions sound good to me. You didn't mention
antivirus/antimalware software; what are you running?
