Question about deleting files....very basic

I have been asked to make some basic changes to my employers web site...I can do
that...

But the web storage appears to be at the max and when I delete useless extra and
old files they don't delete. They remain on the server.

I am really aggrivated since these are merely address changes and simple text
changes I need to make and should have made a week ago now.

I saw that some images in the site are HUGE!! So I reduced them and tried to
overwrite the originals on the server with the new version and it just errors
out and nothing gets saved and I am going bonkers.

I had the server host unlock the website...it locks when you reach
capacity...and after I delete files it locks as soon as I hit save.

I am novice at this, but these are simple tasks that should not be so painful.

can you help me?

How about asking the host to delete some files so that you can get the size
down to something manageable, or increasing the storage capacity?
