Is there some way to automate this operation under XP Tools menu, that
is to get it to automatically execute upon startup or shutdown? If
so, I would appreciate a detailed explanation of how to do it. Thanks
in advance

CCleaner will do this;
Options, Settings, place a checkmark in front of 'Run CCleaner when
computer starts'
