crap thing about Windows-platform-dependent programs is backward or forward
compatibility. eg. WMP9 is the last compatibile version for win2000.

possible getting WMP10 working for win2000?

anyway, think am happy with wmp9 since it doesn't do this:

1. if mp3 is readonly, change it to not readonly
2. if there are no mp3 tags, allocate space for mp3 id tags.

very annoying when one wants to retain mp3s with no id tags.
 
winzip was made to be installed on 95/98/ME/2000/XP/2003

as well as many other software

it's just that MS likes to write platform dependend software

MS forcing everyone to upgrade both software and hardware

No. WMP uses features added to Windows XP that aren't in Windows 2000.
