QCD Player Is NIce!

I saw the past about the QCD Player? http://www.quinnware.com/ (No,
they aren't paying me!)

I'v tried tried them all and narrowed things down to:

Winamp -
- - Very configurable - - - I had trouble tweaking EQ and it used more
resourses than my minimal old machine had to spare.

XMPlay
I liked that it played zip and rar files (maybe others do?? I'd need a
larger 'view", I'd like a skin with larger GUI/ fonts so I can see the
screen from acrross the room. If anyone know about a large GUI, I'm
missing it...

MediaMonkey
Solved the problem "too small" -- Almost to much info but the controls
are still small. But it does a great job of organizing and managing
loads of files - - - It's nice not having to open, find, load
playlists- - they are right right on the main screen.

Foobar 2000 Plays everything and in the basic config & uses the least
resouses on my old P-233. No,, I have have trouble with all mentioned
if I use my minimal sound card.

No, I haven't the used QCD on the ol' 233 but it is in a lapper with
64meg and is smooth as silk.

I can even use the sound card (I'm usually stuck with wave out in older
machines) It my be in my head but I have a minimal pair of AL speakers
which I've never been impressed with. I don't how or if it is QCD, but
those little suckers have never sounded good and they do now.

I just scrolled through the presets and I have a nice mix between a good
bottom end and nice highs.

No, I don't need it for burning but it makes for a great juke box and
seemed to turn a pair of worthless speakers into something better than
fine on an old lapper. I might match it up against any "portable sound"
I know of. I coudn't strap the lapper to my hip but if I have to go
where there isn't sound the old Compaq make for one nice "portable"
sound machine.

So, If you need a resource stingy player that so far uses a sound card
which even the basic Foobar seem to not tolerate - -Check out the QCD
Player. Yes, you ned a few plug-ings along with the DL, but I've stuck
with the default skin.

I'll have to check out the site as it looks like there is more available
- - but it does a lot with a little.

QCD is quite good. I used it for years before moving too foobar2000 after a
year of no QCD development.

FOOBAR2000 (basic) was the only player which was stable on
old/slow/under rammed machines.

So far, QCD seems just as stable and I'm able to use more features, more
easily.

I suspect FOOFAR is better if one needs to burn/encode -- I haven't
checked what's available for QCD. All I need is a "simple" player as I
use other progs for anything more than listening to what's on the
drive/CD. .

Have you checked out 1by1? It's very simple and very effective as well.

Thanks!

Just downloaded and installed.

It runs great on the P-4 - - Now to see how it does on the old lapper
and P-233.

I like the file view. None of the open/find....it's all here

MediaMonkey is nice as it has a nice "view" but it needs to be
refreashed and with a network that means scanning several drives. -----

Hmmm, I just noticed this doesn't show my network? Just the drives on
the local machine?

Well, I've only spent 3 minutes with it...

Just downloaded, installed and am listening (3 minutes total).

1. It works!
2. Looks nice (Big enough, not too big and I like the "file view....none
of the open, find folder/file....it's all there on the player)
3. I only dropped it in the P-4...The test will be in the old lapper and
the P-233.

Yeah, I do like the "look and feel" though it isn't "pretty"? I don't
need "artistic skins".....

Seems obvious to have a view of the drives (file system) w/the player.

One step better than MediaMonkey as it's "just there" and doesn't need
to be refreshed.

If it runs on the old machines it looks like a winner!

How these things remain a secret is beyond me?! I did a search at
sourceforge and all I came up with were linux stuff. I guess I didn't
go deep enough into the results.

But I like this one! (If it runs on the old hardware?)

I gets my vote for anything post '02 machines. I say: "Try it!"

Next report will be on how it works on the slooooooooooooooow box/lapper.

But I like this one!

1by1 is sweet indeed. The only major bug I've found is that it will
infrequently crash on some files, usually (if not always) at the end of
certain tracks. I'm not sure if I've reported this to the author or not, but
I think I'd better.

Also, the equalizer will only stay in effect if the Audio Enhancer (both are
on the Enhancer tab in the program settings) is activated; but the author is
aware of this bug and plans to fix it in the next release.

I have tried most players.
XMplay seems to give me the 'best' sound for my taste (I think it's the
only one with a reverb setting), but it is very small on my screen.
I don't know which QCD you meant, but the new one is QCD MEDIA player and
although a beta, it works well enough.
Winamp is now owned by AOL I believe, so I now stay clear.
The very latest WMP10 (last few days) seems to use less memory and if your
machine handles it, it will do everything well.

I seem to recall when I last tried WinAmp (pre-AOL) that it added a
little distortion to the sound. Now that it's an AOL product, I'm afraid
to use it because the thing will gather and sell my private information,
and worse, will all by itself start burning AOL signup disks. And if I
don't obey, it'll then install un-uninstallable AOL tentacles all over
my system.

Hey: I'm talking from experience (yours may be different)!

So many pluses and minuses! It's less complicated if one isn't trying
to shoehorn something new into a machine from '98!

Yeah, XMplay was the stingiest with resources till if discovered FOOBAR.
Its been months but I recall XMplay did fine with files on the HD but
was a little more fussy with CD's. It might have been an old ROM which
is now gone, anyway. I suspect I could hack the skin and get a large
GUI out of it. I recall someone (here) pointing me to that solution. I
took a quick peek and it seemed to address the font/size but not the
overall size of the player.

Regarding QCD I have ver. 4.51a. The standard Eq seems sufficient but
there are third party plug-ins. This is only day 2 (or 3?!).

They did toss some "extraware" in but it seems legit. I believe I've
only been directed to their site for skins or plug ins.

Winamp (even 10) was the biggest resource hog in my experience. No, not
in a modern machine - -but in the old lapper (yeah,no excuse for 64 mg)
and the 233 w/ 256 mg it's easy to find out which apps are efficient.

As I run a LAN the "nice" view is useless if it only shows local drives.
I have nuttin' on the lapper or the old box. Yeah, I have a buttload
of CD's but it's nice to point to drives with several gig of music.

I haven't had time to check, but there may be a workaround so I can get
more than a local drive-view on the screen.

"Jim Scott"
" I don't know which QCD you meant, but the new one is QCD MEDIA
player"

Here is the other one.

http://www.quinnsoft.com/programs/qsmp3.php

Thats what I have.

I clicked "about" and it said in three days I've played 188 tunes. It
must be doing something right because it didn't screw up in that old
Compaq w/64 meg of memory!

Usually it crashes or locks up and I haven't rebooted it all day. I'll
prolly jinx it, but I didn't even consider how stable it's been. With
W98 that's a minor miracle in itself!
