Q: How to turn off that infernal "Re-Searching" behavior in search

S

Some Dude

I am trying to figure out how to turn off auto-searching when using
the search program in XP. The behavior is that whenever a file is
touched/written XP automatically researches the search that I am
running.

EG

searching for *.bmp

if I write a file out anywhere on the disk it keeps searching. Its
MEGA irritating when you're trying to do something like delete all
*.bmp files and it keeps auto searching and clearing your results.
Plus, it slows down the search process remarkably.

Please help. I have tried to remedy this irritation for quite a
while.

Thanks!

Cheers,

Hi

I have given up the builtin search in WinXP a long time ago. I use the free
Agent Ransack instead to search for files...

Thanks alot! I just downloaded it. If its good enough (not hard to
be in comparison!) i'll just replace the executables!

You can't CUT with ransack or any searching program for that matter.

So basically I've found something you can't fix in XP search.

Although the author(s) of the commerical Ransack (filesearch pro?)
said that they will be including that option in a future version.

That's explorer.exe that handles searching. It also does the taskbar, start menu and desktop. Do not replace.

I use the search program that comes as part of PowerDesk, which I
like very much. It lets you cut and copy.

Does it let you cut and copy without re-searching the filesystem after
you cut something out of the search dialog?

Thanks!

Hi

You can right-click on a file in Agent Ransack and select cut (single file
selection only)...

If I correctly understand what you're asking, yes.
