Q: can't play games in MS-XP Home (does nothing)

M

MarkD

Using Office XP Home on an emachines install (don't get me
started...)

I just bought Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. I was able to
install GTA, but when I try to start the game, it spins
the CD for a few second, but nothing else happens. I
checked the task manager and it doesn't look like the game
is runnng. No errors, no freezing, no BSOD, nothing
happens at all.

how do I troubleshoot?

Hello
GTA: Vice City is a Game which needs a user account
with administrative priviledges when run for the first time.
But if you still can't play then visit www.rockstargames.com for more
details.
As I think, if I'm able to play vice city on XP Pro,
there should be no problem with xp home too.

P.S.
Try getting XP SP1 or SP1a

I'm having the same problem. When I click in the .exe for Vice City, the
mouse pointer turns into a spinning cd icon, the cd spins up inside the cd
player for a few moments... and then nothing happens. In fact, I can't even
eject the Vice City cd- eject doesn't respond- without restarting computer.
This happened with external cd player, too. I'm running WinXP Home SP2 on a
system admin account. It ran fine for several days after intalling SP2, I
also installed Norton AV 2005 yesterday. Maybe that is the problem? I was
hoping for some online help before I start uninstalling things. (I already
tried uninstalling and reinstalling gta vc: no change in behavior.)

Hi Gordon,

Definitely disable or uninstall Norton's 2005 to see it's causing
those problems, especially since they only started afterwards.

Yep, straight after installing SP2, Vice City stopped working for me
The pointer changes to a CD icon and even if I stop the Vice Cit
executable in task manager, I don't get my pointer back :

Hey, Jimmy,
Yes, I did try disabling Norton '05 with no result. When I uninstalled it,
Vice City was running again! As an experiment I reinstalled it and, again,
no Vice City. I finally ended up reinstalling Norton '03 and didn't have
problems running the game... until a few days ago. I don't know what
happened, but the game reverted to not loading again. I didn't make any
changes or anything; there were no new programs installed. I tried using
system restore and went back to my most recent restore point and that did the
trick. The game now seems to be running fine (knock on wood). I hope there
might be some clues here that will help someone figure this out...
Thanx, Gordon

Hi Gordon1955,

I'll forward this to some of the good folks at Symantec
so they can try to reproduce and resolve the issue. :)
