Q. about slide scanning on Canon 8400F

I see that the Canon 8400F comes with a slide holder that holds 4
slides for scanning.

Has anyone tried to scan 8 slides by placing them side by side on the
platen without the holder (slides oriented vertically [[]], two across
and 4 down) so they fall within the lighting stip area of the top
plate? (Maybe you could fit 2 across and 5 down)

Will the CanoScan software/driver recognize and differentiate the 8
images or does it get confused?

Thanks.

The Canon 8400F is limited by the width of the transparency lamp in the lid.
If you remove the cover over the transparency lamp, you will see that it is
only 3 inches by 10 inches. There is only room for the width of one 120
film.

A 35mm slide in the mount is 2 inches wide, if you placed two of them side
by side that would take up 4 inches. The light is only 3 inches wide.

Plus you must have the calibration slot that is in the holder visible.

My advice is try it and see. You will quickly learn what the 8400F can and
cannot do.

Thanks for the reply, what I figured was that the combined image area
of two slides placed side by side in vertical alignment would be just
about 3" -- 1" for each slide, plus 2x the 1/2" of the sides of the
mounts between them (the "outsides" of the mounts don't need to be
scanned) -- so I might just be able to make it.

I figure I could fix the calibration slot issue by making up my own
holder.

I actually have the scanner, so I'll check it out tonight. Thanks for
the info on the lamp width - saved me the trouble of opening the lid
myself!

To close out this thread, it appears to be a no go. The Canon driver
pulled up the preview in (I think ) 9 little slide windows with bits
and pieces of the actual images in them, though two seemed to have the
full slide. Some of the images were duplicated. I couldn't even find
a way to get all 8 images in the preview and manually select them, not
that that would have been a workable option anyway. I also tried using
VueScan, but although the software previewed all the slides, the auto
selecton selected only 4 areas, none of which were a complete image.
So it looks like you are limited to 4 slides at a time using the Canon
holder.

OK, last post to this almost one-man thread. I realized that by
clicking off the thumbnail preview button, I could get all 8 images to
show as they were placed, but the outside edges were cut off because of
a software window, came using the Canon software and VueScan, so the
limition must be in the Canon driver/SDK. So even if you took the
bottom cover off the top lid to expose the ends of the lamp, you would
not be able to select the additional area for scanning.

True.

If you turn off the thumbnail view, you can see the entire scanning area of
the transparency mode. Thumbnail view is the first button on top of the
preview window. (you found it)

The Canon 8400F transparency size is limited by the size of the transparency
light in the lid.
Canon makes other models that have a larger transparency scanning area.

The Canon 8400F will scan the entire 3 x 10 inch transparency area, but no
more.
