Putting in transitions shortened my timeline?!?!?

Hi...I made a movie which was a little over 4 minutes...then I went back and
added transitions between every picture on the storyline and it shortened the
timeline?!?!? Why did that happen? I thought it would lengthen the timeline.
Hope someone know the answer to this:) I have made 2 movies and the same
thing happened to both.
Also, is there a way to say select all to put the same video effect on each
picture? Or do you have to click and drag to each picture? Thanks!!!

transitions make the two adjacent pictures overlap, therefore two 5 second
clips with a one second transition (overlap) results in a 9 second timeline.

About the transitions it is simple once you look in the timeline view
(ctrl-T) what happens when you add a transition.

Tip: How to select multiple clips:
=====================
Here is a summary of ways you can select multiple clips in Storyboard view:

1. Click on first and Shift-click on last to select all in the range
2. Click on first and Ctrl-click on individual clips to select them one by
one
3. Click on any one and press Ctrl-A to select all of them.

To Apply Same Effect to Multiple Clips:
===========================

Method 1:
One way you can add the same effect to multiple clips/pictures is by using
Copy/Paste. Copy the effect by selecting it in the Effects area and pressing
Ctrl-C. Now select as many pictures/clips and press Ctrl-V to apply the
effect.

Method 2:
Another way to apply an effect to multiple pictures/clips is to select them
as above first, and then right-click on the desired effect and select "Apply
to Storyboard". This applies the effect to everyone of the clips in the
selection.

Note:
The above method also works for transitions. Just select the small
transition boxes (between two clips) and follow above procedure with the
desired transition.
