I want to make sure Internet Explorer cannot be used in an installation of
XP SP2, how can I achieve it? I want to use Firefox/Opera and not have any
option to use IE at all. Can you help?

Thanks
Joe

Installing SP2 also updates the files for Internet Explorer.
Internet Explorer cannot be exempted from becoming updated
when installing SP2. IE is tightly integrated with Windows XP
and cannot be removed.

IE is merely the name for part of the operating system. It cannot be
removed. Like "Control Panel" or "Help" you can decline to use it, but you
can't get rid of it nor can you remove the option TO use it.

Are you sure you want to implement Firefox? It will void your warranty and
cause your cat to break out in warts.

You need portions of Internet Explorer on your system because the Help
system will not work without it, nor will any program written with the
Windows SDK that requires an internet connection (to check for updates,
etc).

But you can remove Internet Explorer from the desktop and start menu,
and that should take care of most of your issues. I'm sure others here
can point you to pages in the Microsoft database which tell you how to
do this.

If you want to permanently prevent Internet Explorer from loading as a
standalone browser, that can be done by deleting all instances of the
IEXPLORE.EXE file. Doing this requires the service called Cryptographic
Services to be disabled, and while this is not an issue for most users,
be aware that you will disable the part of Windows File Protection
which automatically replaces protected system files (such as
IEXPLORE.EXE) when you attempt to delete or rename them. The remainder
of WFP will still be active, and in fact you will receive ominous
warning messages when you attempt to delete IEPLORE.EXE. Just ignore the
warnings and tell Windows you do not want to replace the file...
