Putting Computer in Stand By

When my laptop is plugged in to the power source, I cannot put it into Stand
By mode or Hibernation. Is there something I can do to change this? I can put
it in these modes when it is running on battery, however. If I just close my
laptop and it is plugged into the power source, will it eventually go into
stand by mode? How can I get it to go into stand by mode when it is plugged
in? Thanks for the help.

You can check settings as Start>control Panel>Display>screen saver>click
power button.Tell us what setting you have in boxes

It is set as Portable/Laptop for my power scheme. Then the settings for both
"plugged in" and "running on batteries" are set to never. I thought though
that if I change those settings, its more for when you want the computer to
do the task automatically- like if its running on batteries and you have
system standby set to after 3 hours for example, then after 3 hours it does
this automatically.

But both settings are set to never, yet I can put my computer in standby
when it is running on batteries. I dont know if this helps at all...
Thanks, I appreciate it.

I Just tried chaning those settings...for when it is plugged in...and it
didn't make a difference. When my computer is plugged in and I go to click
"stand by" nothing happens, it doesnt say "preparing to stand by" or
anything. A couple weeks ago I used to be able to just shut my computer
without turning it off, and I think it would automatically go into stand
by...but now when I shut it I can still hear it running and it stays on. Any
suggestions?
