I found a site http://www.kozel-oem.com that offers Windows XP Professional
for $49. There are quite a few products sold that can supposedly be
downloaded at exceptionally low prices.

ARE THESE PRODUCTS LEGITIMATE and GENUINE?

I paid $50, not $79, 4 Adobe Photoshop CS2 V 9.0

They buy a volume licence so u get no TS & activate thru vendor not
Adobe. So if vendor disappears ur SOL if u need to reinstall/upgrade.

Any advice is my attempt to contribute more than I have received but I can only assure you that it works on my PC. GOOD LUCK.

Remember the old saying that if it sounds too good to be true, and P.T.
Barnum's golden saying of one being born every minute...

No, of course not.

I did some research and I am convinced that this software is not legitimate.
The fact that they are offered as OEM means that they should be sold together
with some hardware (maybe a PC). Therefore, selling it standalone, even if
it were to work, makes this sound illegal.

This makes me wonder, how can someone be selling this stuff out in the open,
with Websites and PayPal accounts without any fear it seems. OH WELL!

Well, that's not the reason because one can buy generic OEM versions
without hardware no problem.

it were to work, makes this sound illegal.

Did you check to see what country they're in? Perhaps that country
doesn't have the same laws as yours. Check out www.newegg.com and you
will find legit generic OEM versions of XP at a higher price than this
fake web site (but much lower than Retail) and you will notice that you
need not buy any hardware to purchase a copy of a generic OEM version of
XP, Home or Pro.

They used to send u a transistor as the hardware- now they dont
bother. Educational use is another loophole.

Its damn hard to write a contract involving technology that some
attorney cant get around without losing legitimate customers. What r
they gonna do if site is in Iran?

"They buy a volume licence(sic)" and their volume license EULA has been
violated by reselling the activation to someone else. Whether it is Adobe,
Microsoft, Serif, Corel it doesn't matter. They have violated the EULA by
selling that software. This is called pirating of software (which is illegal
in the US and most other countries) and someone just went to jail for doing
what this person or group of people are doing. Just waiting to be caught.

jail for doing
what this person or group of people are doing.

Know case & juristiction or magazine article?

Copyright laws & case law is what's important NOT what U or I agree
with MSoft to do.

From your cited (http://www.siia.net/piracy/faq.asp#Penalties) response

"What are the maximum criminal penalties for copyright infringement?
In the US, the infringer could be fined up to $250,000 and face a jail term
of up to five years. Do people actually go to jail for this? Yes, they do. "

NOT IMPOSSIBLE!

In the USA, where the prison population is only higher in China, it's
not surprising that there are draconian laws like that. After all, the
USA still has the barbaric death penalty and chain gangs.

AND I am glad that they do. I'm glad that I live in the USA and not in
some of the other countries of the world. To each his own.

You like the idea of a death penalty? Do you realize that the USA has
killed hundreds of death row prisoners and later found out they were
innocent? What if it were your son who was murdered by the USA draconian
penal system and you knew he was innocent? Would you still support this
barbaric practice?

Did you, per chance, vote for George W. Bush?

Not all of us in the US are happy with those policies.

It doesn't matter who I voted for as the alternative to Bush would have been
just as bad. Clinton (man and woman), Carter, both Bushes, Nixon and
Johnson didn't and won't do a whole lot for the US. I haven't seen or met a
politician in the last 30 years that I liked. I don't agree with many of the
laws or policies of the US but as I said, I would rather live here than in
any other country of the world. Almost every country I have visited,
Europe, Asia, Middle East, etc. have as many or more problems than we have
here in the US. At least we are free to change our leadership when we feel
the need. The same can't be said for many other countries of the world.

I make it a habit of talking to the people of the various countries I visit
to find out what it is like to live in their country and with their culture.
I check on taxes, human rights, cost of living, and many other things that
any countryman has to deal with on a daily basis. There is NO perfect
country. All of them have different policies and punishments for violating
infractions. Caning and stoning (to death) is perfectly legal in a few of
the more "civilized" countries of the world.

There are other areas of the world that in my opinion are more barbaric than
a death penalty would be. Would you like your daughter's vagina sewn shut
because it is the policy of your country or your country's predominate
religion?

BTW, I voted in the last election for a person who is in favor of repealing
the death penalty in the state I live in so I can't be all bad!

U forgot 'In cases of willful infringement' which is pretty hard to
prove. Perhaps u could cite a case.

I didn't forget anything. I quoted the citation exactly.

The last case I remember reading about was in the local newspaper from,
IIRC, an AP news article. Was within the last two weeks. Can't further
cite the article other than the guy got 5 months + fine.
