How can I install Win xp Pro on three computers in the same house hold without buying an additional xp pro. I have four computers. One laptop with WIN XP HOME,
One pc that had Win 2000 that I replaced with Win xp pro, One pc in my motorhome that has Win 2000, and one pc that has Win Me installed. I've already installed xp on the pc that had Win 2000 and noted in the instructions that I could not installed the same xp pro onto the Win Me system in a stand alone configuration. I would like to get all my computers on the same operationg system. Please some one help with this problem.

What it says, is what it means...Only one licensed copy per computer...No
ifs, ands, or buts...You must purchase seperate copies for each computer.
Hope this answers your question.

Each installation of Windows XP requires a different Product Key (license) that
you must purchase. Otherwise, Product Activation will fail. Therefore, if you
wish to install Windows XP on other PC's, you'll have to purchase a new license
for each additional installation.

Once you purchase another license (Product Key), you may install
Windows XP on another computer using the same CD but using the
new Product Key.

On the back of the Windows XP box, please read the statement
"For installation and use on one computer"
(see License Agreement for license terms).

To access the License Agreement on your XP computer, go to:

Start > Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter.

Then click on "End-User License Agreement".

You can also open XP's "Help and Support" and type: EULA
and hit enter. Click on "Questions and answers about the EULA".

The End-User License Agreement states quite clearly:

"You may install, use, access, display and run one copy
of the Software on a single computer...."

You can install one (1) copy of Windows XP on one (1) computer.
Additional installations requires additional licenses (Product Keys)
for each installation on a different computer.

Carey, Thanks for correcting me. I have seen debates here in this newsgroup
regarding using the same CD, but with different licenses...So that's why I
responded the way I did...

Do you need two licences for two installations of XP on the same computer
(different partitions)?

No!

You can use the same copy on the same PC as mnay times as you wish. "Copy"
means the disk itself, and the EULA states that it is to be used on one PC
(or piece of hardware) at one time. It says nothing about installing the
same disk multiple times on the same PC or not allowing such a use. One can
only use one installation at a time anyway. Why should MS force others to
buy another disk to load on the same PC? even Alex Nichol makes such a
deabte, inasmuch that your interpretation makes beta testing an agreement
breaker.

Stop spreading FUD.

Just to be sure you understand what is legal:

1.1 Installation and use. You may install, use, access, display and run one copy of the Software on a single computer, such as a workstation, terminal or other device ("Workstation Computer").

No more need be discussed. One copy of Software can be installed on One PC.

If you want to run XP on all your PCs, I suggest that you buy the XP Pro upgrade version: one for each Qualifying PC - all yours qualify.

You may be able to take advantage of the Academic Edition if the use of the PCs qualifys.

Otherwise you can speak to Microsoft about volume licencing.

As an aside: if you have more than one car - do you drive them all using the same Licence Plate and Insurance Certificate?

I guess the answer is no. So why not pay Microsoft it's due and give them the dollars for a Software Licence.

Greetings --

You'll need to purchase a separate WinXP license for each computer
on which you install it.

As it has *always* been with *all* Microsoft operating systems,
it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA and U.S.
copyright law http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/117.html), if not
technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on which
it is installed. (Consult an attorney versed in copyright law to
determine final applicability in your locale.) The only way in which
WinXP licensing differs from that of earlier versions of Windows is
that Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and anti-theft
mechanism, Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make more
difficult) multiple installations using a single license.

You can buy additional licenses, assuming you have a retail
license. Naturally, Microsoft cannot sell additional OEM licenses.
Be aware, however, that you'll probably pay more this way than you
would if you were to buy a second copy of WinXP from a discount
retailer; Microsoft will only offer you a 15% discount off their MSRP.

Install one copy of XP... I only have the one copy, so, not a problem.

Use... Well, I'm using the copy I installed on one computer, doesn't
matter what partition I'm using it from, so, not a problem.

Access... I don't think XP will use more that one install at a time,
so, no problem here.

Display... Don't know what they mean with this, so, not a problem for
me.

Run... see (Use...), so, not a problem.

I don't think Microsoft would take you to court over this use of
multiple installs on a single computer. I happen to have an image of
my c drive stored as a file on my system, which could be considered a
second install, I guess. I guess that means I'm a bad boy and should
be punished. ::drool::, but I'm getting off topic here. :)

No, but I use one drivers license for all cars, just don't try to
drive them all at the same time. The issue is clear, and the text of
the EULA is moot.

That's rich Carey, now you're a liar, and YOU ARE EXPOSED!

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/office/xp/all/reskit/en-us/eula.mspx

"""GRANT OF LICENSE. This EULA grants You the following rights:

. Installation and Use. If You licensed the Software from Your
hardware manufacturer, You may install and use one (1) copy of the Software.
If You licensed the Software from Microsoft, You may install and use an
unlimited number of copies of the Software."""

Are you such a zealot that you now have the balls to change thw ording of
the EULA. it does not have "run" in that phrase, it says "install and *use8
1 copy". I am only using 1 copy on one PC.

Question for everyone else - have any of you ever seen Carey criticise or
find any fault with MS, even when they are wrong?

This has to do with Office XP Resource Kit.

The only EULA that is relevant is the one included
on your own computer. In other words, referencing
an EULA from a different source is entirely irrelevant.
The EULA in your own computer is the only relevant
"legal" document which outlines the terms and conditions
relative to the use of your version of Windows XP.

Should you have any questions concerning your EULA, or if you
desire to contact Microsoft for any reason, please write:
Microsoft Corporation, Legal Department, One Microsoft Way,
Redmond, WA 98052-6399.
