Pulling down attachments

My new XP will not allow me to open certain attachments.
I downloaded Adobe reader and can now open them however
the standard mail attachments, word and others just won't
open. I thought it might be a security issue but really
don't know. Anybody have any ideas??? Thanks.

Do you have Word installed on the computer?
Word and other Office components have never been a part of any
operating system.
