I have set up a direct cable connection between my old
win95 pc (as host) and my new winxp laptop (as guest) via
parallel cable.
the connection appears to be working, in as far as it
reaches the "verifying user name & password" bit on both
pcs,but then a dialog box pops up with: "windows was
unable to connect to the network using the user name and
password you provided. please re-enter the user name and
password.", which i initially presumed was the username
and password i use to log on to my old computer, but i
had no user password for the w95 pc so i made it blank
and the box reappears.
so, i created a password at the w95 pc and when i re-
enter the name & password, the message: "error 691:
access was denied because the username and/or password
was invalid on the domain." appears.
i have tried: leaving the password blank, getting rid of
my login password from the old pc, enabling password
protection for the dcc on the old pc, using the same
password to log on to both computers, deleting every
password i could think of on both computers, deleting the
connection and setting it up again, checking and re-
checking every part of the connection... i just cant
think of anything else to try.
one answer ive found is that "direct cable connection
works best with netbeui protocol, and to make sure you
have file and printer sharing enabled on both machines,
then install netbeui on win9x and install it on xp as
well, installing netbeui on xp is bit tricky, you will
need xp cd for this."
so, i tried to install the netbeui protocol on xp,
following the instructions on the microsoft site to the
letter,
but, although i shows up on the protocol list for my
local area connection, it still is not shown in
the "select network protocol" list for the direct cable
connection (only "network monitor driver" is listed).
i have tried restarting the computer, and have double
checked to make sure i copied the files to the correct
directories, but it is still not listed.
i have file & printer sharing enabled, and tcp/ip is
enabled at the moment.
please advise, and thank you for your help.
