Local network access -asking for password to view my pc-?

Have re-installed winxp-pro and spent days putting all the settings
back ...I am the sole user so have the admin a/c

I have a radio home network accessed by broadband / router /
wirless-hub

My Pc connects to the router via lan cable , othere pc's via the radio
....

Everything works fine , othere pc's on the net can view files and
printer's ..on each others pc's .. I can view all the pc's on the
network .. all can access the web ..

Problem .... If any of the network pc's try to view my pc ... up popp's
a window asking for a user name and password ... I dident have this
before I formatted and re-loaded the system .. Ive run the network
wizzard and selected 'file and printer' share .. As far as i know i
have not set up any passwords or use accounts ..

SO WHY ARE THE OTHER NETWORK PC'S ASKING FOR A USERNAME AND PASSWORD TO
VIEW MY SHARED FILES ..I CAN VIEW THEM , THAY CANNOT VIEW ME ..

Tnx - Graham ..

You don't need to shout. Asking nicely always works better.

This is most commonly caused by a misconfigured firewall. When you run
the Network Setup Wizard it turns on the XPSP2 Windows Firewall. If you
aren't running a third-party firewall or have an antivirus with
"Internet Worm Protection" (like Norton 2005/06) which acts as a
firewall, then you're fine. But if you have third-party firewall
software, you need to configure it to allow the Local Area Network
traffic as trusted. I usually do this with my firewalls with an IP
range. Ex. would be 192.168.1.0-192.168.1.254. Obviously you would
substitute your correct subnet.

If one or more of the computers is XP Pro or Media Center:

a. If you need Pro's ability to set fine-grained permissions, turn off
Simple File Sharing (Folder Options>View tab) and create identical user
accounts/passwords on all computers.

b. If you don't care about using Pro's advanced features, leave the
Simple File Sharing enabled.

Simple File Sharing means that Guest (network) is enabled. This means
that anyone without a user account on the target system can use its
resources. This is a security hole but only you can decide if it
matters in your situation.

Then create shares as desired. XP Home does not permit sharing of users'
home directories (My Documents) or Program Files, but you can share
folders inside those directories. A better choice is to simply use the
Shared Documents folder.

If that doesn't work for you, here is an excellent network
troubleshooter by MVP Hans-Georg Michna. Take the time to go through it
and it will usually pinpoint the problem area(s) -

Did you create identical user accounts/passwords on all machines? If you
still aren't getting it, do as I suggested and take the time to go
through Mr. Michna's troubleshooter. It is very thorough.

OK Malk

I had a look lastnight at the ms help ... it seems as you say i need to
turn the guest a/c on and then issue it with a password - when i
changed the file share option to simple ... the othere netowk pc's
winxp and me , all sisplayed the user a/c in the log in box , and
wanted a pass word .. so thats next on the list ... but i did not have
to do this before i re-installed a new copy of windows .. original
was a pre-sp2 version that updated , this one is a new issue
.............

looks like i will need to set the user a/c to 'on' and set a pass
word . then set each net pc the same ..

tnx for the help ..
