"psw" files

I have a program that uses the file extension, 'psw' as its standard data
file. I have changed the association for 'psw' to that program from the
Windows password backup. Nevertheless, in Windows Explorer, next to the psw
files, it does not show the icon for *my* program and when you hover the
mouse over the name, the tooltip still shows password backup. And if I save
some of my files to CD and then restore them, they are then unreadable by my
program.

Is there a way I can banish that 'windows password backup' completely so
that I can go back to normal. This happens in both SP1 and SP2, but was not
a problem in Win98.

Thanks...

Neal,

Have you tried changing the default icon via Folder Options > File Types dialog?

No, but that is not the most important problem. It is only a symptom of the
problem that despite my changing the association, Windows still thinks psw
refers to the password backup.

Neal,

Not used "Windows Password Backup", but you change the association / ProgID here, in the registry:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.nnn
(default) set to ProgID

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ProgID
