PST issue

Hello,
I have inherrited a problem that's got me confused.
A user had a large PST file that was never backed up.
Wanted it copied to their server for safe keeping in prep. of having a new
PST created to work from.
Original size was 3.6GB.
Moved the file to the server share (full access rights)
Opened outlook and the file is there, no problems, but now it's only 1.6GB
in size.

Here's the strange part:

Data and e-mails from 2004-2006 is there.
No data from 9/2006 until 1/2007.

Any ideas on how to recover this? Is the data gone?
I have already tried to pick through the hard drive and get a recovered copy
using file scavenger but I get an error that chains are lost in the file.

Thanks in advance,
STS

It can't be gone, all email is archived in one file: the pst file.
Did you back up it? Or did you move in stead of copy?
I'm affraid you moved it to the network share. Only moving it can't
change the size from 3.6 GB to 1.6 GB. The only way to reduce the size
of the pst file is compacting it, by Outlook. Did you do that?
Are you sure you are talking about only one and the same pst file?
Besides, a pst file of that size is not wise. Better reduce it!
