pst file disappeared !

Hi,

a user set AutoArchive options within Outlook and, after reboot, the
pst file containing all the user's mail is lost.

I found out that the user sets Outlook 2003 to AutoArchive in its
default location: C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Archive.pst.

Now, this user uses folder redirection, ie its profile is stored in
\\server1\user\profile while its application data is stored in
\\server1\user\applicationdata. Well this pst file is missing and there
are no problems with the roaming profile or folder redirection. I've
been able to simulate the problem on a different but similar
infrastructure.

So why does the pst file disappears ? I searched for the pst file in
the local client as well as on the file server and the Exchange 2003
server but it's really missing.

Bad idea. I'd disable this for everyone. If the data is important, it
belongs in Exchange. Either in the mailbox or in a public folder. If someone
wants a PST file, manually create one, burn it to CD, and give it to them to
take home for safekeeping.

Not sure, but note that MS doesn't support accessing PST files across a
LAN/WAN connection at all, and this may be related to your problem. I've
never experienced it, but a) I don't allow PST files when there's Exchange
and b) I don't redirect application data. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Redirecting Application Data redirects the c:\documents and
settings\%username%\Application Data folder.

The Local Settings folder does not roam, nor get redirected. Best reasoning
for not roaming or redirecting that folder is that Temp Internet Files are
stored in there. Would you want someone to surf the internet and you save
their cache files on your server?

This may be stating the obvious, but the 'Local Settings' folder
contained in the user profile is *hidden*. Make sure that you have
hidden file/folder viewing turned on when searching for the PST file.

Hi,

I am unfamililar with Outlook or Exchange as I don’t use either.
However, if you are Running Windows Server 2003 you might want to
consider enabling Shadow Copies on your File Server and Exchange
Server. They are amazing and let you and users recover lost or
deleted files as easily as a right click - previous versions. I have
mine running daily and I cannot believe how often I use them.

Cheers,

Hey,

My pst file is no where to be found too this morning. I couldn't print, so
I rebooted, but first I got an error that Outlook was not responding although
I had already closed it. Then I tried to open Outlook and my pst file is
completely gone. Did you find a solution? I had this problem before back in
January, but solved it by storing the file on the network, but when the file
got to 1.3 GB it wasn't running so well. Were you able to find your email?
I at least have a backup as of 9/29 and five days of email stored on my
server.

Thanks!

Sherry
