I've been trying a few different ones lately for editing .php files and am
finding that I really like PSPad as well. The built in ftp is handy at
times too.

PsPad can only use a few fixed fonts, no proportional fonts.
Otherwise it looks very capable.

In my opinion, its the best FREE text and code editor out there!!!

Darn nice Fr.

Reminds me of the heavy-duty text editors such as Texturizer and UltraEdit.
Too heavy for everyday text viewing and editing, but great for the heavy
stuff and for coding. I'm going to study up on the PSPad macros, and I hope
they're as useful as they were in Texturizer.

Yes .. it comes close. And, FWIW, PSPad is one of the few that performs
a rare, rare trick of reformatting paragraph(s) permanently. That is to
say,
the user can adjust margins in or out, and then reformat the text to fit
within
those margins ... PLUS, the new formation can be SAVED that way with
the new margins. PSPad actually finds, deletes, and reapplies where needed,
all the OD OA bytes (line endings and line feeds). This is sooo kewl!

About that, see <
PFE is another one. One of the many reason I like it.
Will have a look at PSPad later.

All the best,

It is a very nice editor, for sure. I prefer my old Crypt Edit for
editing text, but PsPad is great for html or any other coding.
Agreed, PSPad is a bit too much for me, but it's still my editor of choice
because of it's html check, and also html tidy - makes my scrawl magically
understandable in one hit.

I don't understand any of the other things it does....

Bjorn, I got rid of PFE as it not only hijacked my text file
association, it deleted the plain text entry, so I had to recreate it.
Strange that a text editor created with programmers in mind has habits
like that.

On the site, it says the installer is not needed. The only other file
besides the installer version is a CAB file. I select it to save, and
the screen opens showing a page of code, not the usual download screen.
Tried it in several browsers, same result.

A URL for the no-install version?

What happens when you right-click the URL for the CAB, and choose
"Save As", "Save Target As", or the equivalent? That seems to work as
expected here, and I can then extract it normally.

That's a 2.7 MB exe file, it does not sound like a no-install file, that
is normally a zip file.

Handsome features aside, this guy is not environmentally friendly. Demands a
lot of resources. Inserts filetype keys to the registry whenever you run it;
no option to turn that off. And creates settings files outside way off in a
distant, external location (...\common files\application data\pspad\).

Thanks, Karen. That kills it for me. Recently there was a "small,
simple" archive program mentioned- JustZIPit, a small exe.
That dammned program instantly installed, hijacked zip file
associations, put shortcuts everywhere, etc- I hate that.

Now I have to learn Context Edit to clean out my rightclick context
menu.
