psp keyboard not working in USB

Hi

I'm running XP Home, SP2 on a Toshiba laptop. I needed to attach a PS/2
mouse and a PS/2 standard basic keyboard to the laptop's USB port.

I purchased the correct adapter but even though the device manager shows
both new items as "HID-compliant mouse" and "HID Keyboard device" and their
properties show them to be enable and "functioning properly", neither one
works, meaning that moving the mouse and typing on the keyboard have no
effect.

I tried 2 different USB - PS2 adapters so it is not the adapters.

What should I do?

Thanks.

Enable "USB Legacy Support" in BIOS. While a little more expensive,
I would just go with a Wireless Mouse/Keyboard combo if this a setup
you need to use on a regular basis. (Use one with either PS2 or USB
capable receiver).

Thanks for the rapid reply.

I checked and USB Legacy support is enabled in the BIOS setup.

This is for temporary use, not permanent.

Anything else I should check as to why they are not working?

So you bought the "Y" (2 Female to 1 Male) adapter ?

Did you check the Notebook BIOS for the Touchpad/Mouse
selector field ? Most have a Autodetect that inhibits the TP if
external devices are used. Also, Touchpad & Mouse drivers
take over control of each other - does the notebook have a
Alps/Synaptics Touchpad driver/control applet installed ?

Yes I did. (I also have 2 separate USB - PS/2 $4 adapters, but I think they
are for the reverse direction)

Actually this laptop is my wife's and - unlike my own Dell laptop - I cannot
seem to access its BIOS on startup no matter what I do (tried F2 and Del
with no success). On her Toshiba Satellite, the only access to the BIOS is
through a utility called "Toshiba Console" which permits you to set BIOS
passwords, hardware settings, etc. That is where I saw that the USB/KB
Legacy Emulation was enabled. But nowhere does it mention Autodetect that I
can find.

That is why I delayed my reply trying all sorts of things to access its BIOS
screens on bootup but no-go.

This laptop has an Alps Touchpad. I was considering disabling it (in the
"Toshiba Console") but was concerned about how to get back to re-enable it
without a mouse if the USB still did not work ..... :-(
