I thought I had a dead board. It turns out it was a bad PS2 mouse. I
was really surprised. The system will not even start with this mouse
plugged in. It works fine with another mouse.

Is this common? I spent three days froubleshooting before I stumbled
on the mouse issue.

TIA,

It's not common but it has happened to other people too. A friend and
I were building a new computer recently and we installed a fan with a
cold cathode tube light on it. The system would not boot up with that
fan installed. Change fan and it boots with no problem.

Ditto.PS2 mice have quite a lot of current running through them unlike
USB/Old Serial mice.Any short in them or removing them whilst there is
power to the system/board can not only cause boot problems but can
actually damage the mother board!!

I've seen a PCI modem do this -- the system wouldn't even post. modem out
== windows all happy and fluffy.
new modem solved the problem.
