PS2 - hibernation freezing menus & folders

Installed SP2 on pc with Win XP Pro SP1 with all precautions and latest
drivers as per:

Installation went fine.....but:
1. if i now close pc via Hibernation and then reboot, when i click to open
Start\Settings\Control panel, the three menus freeze and i cancel them only
with "Esc" key.
2. then, in control panel, if i try to highlight any single item, an entire
contiguous group of items do highlight at the time.
I tried a different mouse an keyboard but in vain. Graphic card is ATI
Radeon 9000
Any suggestion or do i have to forget hibernation?

Sorry to bother the Ng. All problems due by an old keyboard with a
faulty shift key.
