Proxy Desktop - displays when shutting down... Virus?

F

feedscrn

I see this program ... something called Proxy Desktop, many times when
shutting down one of my pcs (the other does not display this). Both
pcs are XP SP3. The one that shows Proxy Desktop is used mainly for
internet browsing, etc. It has:
-McAfee Internet Security 2009
-ZoneAlarm, build: zaSuiteSetup_90_114_000_en.exe
-MalwareBytes Anti-Malware 1.41
-SuperAntiSpyWare 4.29.1002, core 4160, trace 2085 (10/12/2009)

Proxy Desktop sounds suspicious... It sounds like someone has a copy
of my desktop somewhere on the internet, and is monitoring
keystrokes....

Any help you can provide would be great.

Try this:

Please uncheck - Windows Explorer >Tools > Folder Options > View >
Launch folder windows in a separate process - and see if that helps.

Bernd... Thank you for your quick input.
You are right... There is something connected to this setting, or to
Same Folder / Separate Folder. A few wks ago, I've had 'different
folders' checked before, and the setting 'automagically' reset itself
to 'one folder'.. This has been going on for a while, sporatically.

Concerning tonight...I've done Restart, Shutdown, with different
folders / one folder ... same process / separate process.... nothing.
I know that this may sound a bit paranoid... but I am wondering if
there is somebody monitoring my desktop... who sees this thread and is
currently laying off(??)....

Like I mentioned, it's sporadic... If I, or anybody else who wants
to... sees Proxy Desktop again, this thread will be updated.

Another possible connection: I find that when I try to download or
upload a file using a web browser, the computer will Many Times hang
as I traverse the pc folder structure and go to 'My Computer'. In
fact, 'My Computer' from the Start menu will often make the computer
hang in the same way. In both Windows Explorer or in a Web Browser...
sometimes, after 10 minutes, the drive icons will show up. Don't count
on it though.

Bernd

Yes!... I have mapped drives to another pc on my home network.
Sometimes the pc is turned off though.

Wow... I never thought that this could be the cause. Obviously not
virus-related. Is there a way to go around this?

Thank You....

Don't permanently/persistant map letters to drives that aren't always
available.

Use a shortcut to the PC\drive\folder or a batch file to map them on the
fly if needed (see NET USE /? at a command prompt)

Example batch file contents

NET USE Z: \\otherPCname\shared-directory-name

By the way:
There is another hidden reason for bad performance during accessing (not
connecting) folders over the network: The WebClient service.
If you don't use WebDAV you don't need that service and should
deactivate it.

It's too bad that there is not some kind of option that allows a semi-
persistent network drive. It would be persistent when it's available,
but when it's not, it would be ignored. Do you know if Windows 7
handle these types of drives better?
