Protection against worm

I use a cable modem through a hub. Is this considered a
firewall? Do I need to download the worm patch from
Microsoft?

No, that's not a firewall.

Download EVERY security patch from Microsoft, especially the worm
prevention. Regularly. Don't wait until it becomes a problem.
