Protect parts of a MS Word Doc

Hello, we had someone created a customer satisfaction survey and they
were going to print it and send it out to each customer location. We
thought it would go more quickly if we emailed it but I'm coming across
a problem with its current format.

Here's the issue:
Currently the check boxes can only get an X put in them if you double
click on the box and choose "checked". I know that nobody is going to
want to do that for each item. If I protect the document, then you can
put an X in the check boxes easily, but then you can't type anything in
the comments section on the bottom. Do you know of any way that I can
protect the top half of the document and not the bottom half (without
having to make it an entirely separate document)?

There are a number of ways to create and use clickable checkboxes in
documents / templates. Some require protected or locked forms, others do
not. Take a look at the Checkbox template available at

Insert a continuous section break (Insert > Break > Continuous) between the
two areas.

Use the Protect Document task pane (not the lock icon on the Forms toolbar).
After you select "Filling in forms" in the Editing Restrictions dropdown, a
link will appear below it for "Select sections..." Click that and, in the
resulting dialog, uncheck section 2. Continue the rest of the process to
apply protection.

Jay has given you the answer you asked for, but note that you can equally
well use a text form field for the comments. Check boxes are just one kind
of form field; text form fields can be freeform and accommodate as much text
as users want to type.
