Protect button ghosted and fields won't wrap in form.

I am using Windows XP Word. I have made a form which worked fine about
halfway through the writing of it, but by the time I finished I had two
problems. Firstly, the 'yes, start enforcing protection button' is ghosted.
I can get around this by cutting and pasting the content into a new document,
but as soon as I make any changes it is ghosted again.

Secondly, when I do manage to protect the document, the text boxes are not
wrapping but just making one long line of text.

Sounds as if something might be damaged...

Which version of Word?

Which toolbar are you using to insert the fields in the form?

If you copy/paste into a new doc a bit at a time, can you find the point at
which things "go bad"?
