Pros / Cons between XP Pro and XP Media Center ?

*ProteanThread*

Where can I find the differences (& pros cons) between XP Pro and XP
Media Center Edition? Is Media Center just a souped up version of Home
Edition or does it offer the same security as Pro (meaning I don't have
to login safemode under Administrator to perform basic security tasks)?

etc. etc. etc. :)

Five editions of Windows XP compared

"Windows XP Media Center is a superset of Windows XP Professional
Edition that provides a wide range of features to help you use
multimedia technology such as: TV Tuners, FM Tuners, Video Capture
Devices, Digital Cameras and more. These features go above and beyond
what was possible in Windows XP Professional to help make your PC a
digital hub for all your multimedia needs. The key feature that Windows
Professional Edition has that Media Center 2005 lacks is support for
Domain Controllers."

WinXP Media Center Edition is a _superset_ (iow, it does
_everything_ WinXP Pro can do (except join a domain), plus contains
additional multi-media features) of WinXP Pro.

No, it's essentialy a "souped-up" version of XP *Professional*, not Home. It
doesn't have the ability to join a domain, as Professional does, but
otherwise it's Professional with the extra media features.

so i don't have to login under safe mode to change file / folder
permissions or use security features (logged in under admin account) as
i do under XP Home ?

Yes. I'm running XP Media Centre and it's right here.

As others have said, Media Centre is based on XP Pro, not on XP Home.

However, the one major function of XP Pro that Media Centre will not do is
join a domain based network. If you don't even know what that means, then
you don't need to worry about it.

As I read more and more of these explanations (some
in reply to my _own_ inquiry about the difference),
I wonder, _why_ was the ability to join a domain left
out of Media Center? Somebody at MS had a bad night
with their partner and felt pissed off at the world?

I wonder about that too. I can think of a few applications for media centre
in a work environment. Also, it just seems like a pointless thing to do full
stop. I mean they started with XP Pro so it took more effort to remove it as
part of making media centre than it would have to just leave it where it
was.

I'm always surprised at "professionals" who STILL have to be asked "Have you
checked (event viewer / syslog)".

I believe it's to do with the media extenders used. You'll find out more
by posting to the mediacenter newsgroup than to less focussed groups.
