prompt disappears for password login

I have two users on one XP pro sp2 machine. When a user logs off and the
machine resets there is no prompt at the password login screen for either
user. The password box opens but there is no prompt and nothing can be
typed in. I did a repair reinstall but no joy. Any suggestions?
