programs won't load

I startup my pc and click on a shortcut, or use the start menu, but programs
won't open. Instead the shortcut just becomes transparent. I have done
multiple virus scans and have deleted all viruses. Therefore I have no idea
what the problem is. It all began when I had a screensaver on, and couldn't
get back to windows (the screensaver wouldn't go away). I eventually had to
restart my pc, and when I started it up again, I couldn't open any programs.
Alot of the programs that start up when I normally log on aren't opening. Any
suggestions or help would be grately appreciated.

BTW, how did you manage to run a virus scan ?

Do you have any other user accounts ? if not try boot into safe mode
Administrator account to see if it happens there ? The password should be
blank and you can press F8 key at the startup to access Safe mode.

If it happens there, I am afraid the system files are corrupted and may
require a reinstall too. Before going for a repair install you can run sfc
/scannow from Start -> Run.

If not, the user profile should have been corrupted.

Will wait for the result before proceeding with reinstall.

Try the .exe, .com and .bat file association fixes from Doug Knox' site,

Sorry, meant to add you should also run the .lnk file fix at that same
site.
