Programs will not run when connected to net.

Hiya All

Hoping you can help please?

Running Windows XP Home Edition on a VIA C3 1.2 GHz Patriot Laptop that uses
a VIA Rhine II network card.

When the laptop is not connected to the net all programs work.

However when I connect to the net (via a cable into a Netgear ADSL Router)
and start Explorer no other programs will then start. I've tested this with
notepad and by right-clicking the desktop and selecting properties and also
Cntrl-alt-del. Only thing that happens is little egg-timer for few seconds
then nothing. If I disconnect network and shut down Explorer (by using little
cross in top right) the programs will still not work - not even Windows
shut-down procedure.

I've updated the drivers for the network card - no difference.

I don't think it is the network card as I experience similar programs when
trying to use the netgear wireless USB device also.

Oh, yes and in order to try and sort the problem I've restored the XP
installation so there are no programs other than XP installed (I cant even
get Windows update to load). I've also disabled the firewall.

Any ideas?

Hi -
I'm no expert but had a similar situation which I resolved by disabling the
Auto Updates and other programs which attempted to connect to their makers
when an internet connection is detected. I presume that as soon as an
internet connection is detected then the myriad of programs which try to
connect hog the resources of the computer. It may be worth trying therefore,
disabling Windows/Microsoft Updates and then rebooting to see if that does
the trick.
