Programs will not open/after sp2 upgrade

Tried this twice: Win xp home edition
First I removed some viruses and adware.
Did the auto update to sp2. Rebooted the computer. now none of the programs
or folders will open.
So I did a repair install with the disk. Everything worked fine. So I did
the auto update for sp2. It said it was successful. I rebooted and again the
folders and programs will not open.

If I were you, I would back everything up, format the HD, reinstall XP, do a
clean up, chkdsk and defrag. Immediately after that, install SP2 FROM THE CD
and do another clean up, chkdsk and defrag. Then install your programs doing
a clean up, chkdsk and defrag after each install. Then install your devices.
The chkdsk and defrag should be done in Safe Mode, while the clean up in
Normal Mode.
