In Win98 you could go through System Tools, System Info, Tools, Startup and
see which systems were launched automatically at start up. It gave you the
opportunity to check or uncheck them. Where is this found in WinXP? I have
lots of icons loading in the task bar and running in the background that I
don't need all the time. How can I shut them down?

Basically with the same type of Utility. Go to Start>Run type: msconfig
click Ok select Startup tab and Uncheck anything you don't want starting
at bootup.

Go to Start...Run and type in msconfig and then press enter to get to it.

I don't like the interface, so I use StartUpCPL by Mike Lin instead - it's
available for free from here - http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

Once installed it puts an icon in your Control Panel that's called Startup.
Just click on it and away you go!

Use the Program's options and uncheck Automatically start with windows or
something similar. If you cannot find these options, then launch the MS
Configuration Utility by typing

msconfig

in the run dialog box to find the location of the program's start up entry.
You should not use msconfig to stop startup items on a long term basis, it
is meant as a troubleshooting utility. MSconfig will provide you the
location of the startup entry if you cannot use the program's option to stop
the auto start upon the start of windows. When you have located the startup
entry location, then navigate to location and delete the start up entry.
