Green background color

Real novice here-got a problem. I have Windows XP. Background color turned to
blue a few weeks ago. Fixed itself, then went to red. Fixed itself again, now
has stayed on green. Changing background color to silver or light green just
makes background color lighter shades of green. Will NOT change to default
color of blue. Clicking back to default color and clicking apply just makes
it a darker green. Checked all my cables, they're tight and clean. Monitor
DOES have other colors-on startup, it has a nice blue display of the monitor
brand name. Windows symbol has all the right colors, but they're slightly
faded looking. Screen saver has nice red color on the car I have on it. But
all background color is green. Task bar color is green. There's something on
the display settings that allows you to set other (background?)colors-about
20 of them-this USED to work, but now does nothing. I saw one answer to a
question on here that said something about opening the case to check a video
card-where is this? I know very little about this system or how to use all
of it's features, so please, anyone giving an answer, please use terms I can
understand.

OK you ask for terms you can understand, so here it is.
Do yourself a favor, save time and money and take your PC and monitor to a
reputable PC repair shop. I say this based on your post saying you are a
novice and I truly don't recommend you opening the case at this time and
messing around. Not being critical to you at all, but give yourself time to
learn and some day you will be able to diagnose and repair your own
problems. I feel this is over your head and you may do more harm than good.

Thanks for fast response. I kinda figured that I'd get an answer like this. I
fully realize that I could take it in for service, I was just wondering if
there was something simple I'm doing wrong. That's why I used this forum. I
assumed that's what it is here for. I'm not a cheapskate, I just HAVE to
keep this thing up and running to do some of my work, so down time really
isn't an option at this time. Obviously I know how to navigate somewhat as I
do know how to get to the settings and default color. I even tried a few
other things I saw in other responses just to try to get a grip on what was
really the problem. Reading some of the other replies to problems, and the
answers given, just made me want to try to break this down to understandable
terms. Would I be correct in assuming that I could try another monitor to try
to isolate my problem to either the monitor or the computer? I just assumed
the problem WASN'T the monitor as it DOES have other colors on the screen.
Any other help would be appreciated. Thanks again.

By all means try another monitor and by asking that question already tells
me you are on your way to diagnosing your problems by process of
elimination.Good for you :>)

Do you have a book/pamphlet that shows you the inside of your system and
describes what's inside?

Thanks for continued responses. No, nothing that tells me what's inside.
Thought I had another monitor here in basement, but wife says it was given
away. Rats. Unless you had another sugestion, I guess it's bite the bullet
and just take it in. I'm assuming it's not the monitor, as I have nice blue
color on startup and some other colors on desktop, but that green tint is
like having a green plastic cover over my monitor. Thanks anyways.

Hi again,

The reason I ask if you had a book/pamphlet as it might tell you if you have
an onboard Video card, AGP, PCI or PCI Express. Look where your Monitor
cable plugs in. Is it toward the top next to your USB ports or down toward
the bottom in one of the long slots?
