programs shut down on own on xp system

I have a XP system that has devoloped a annoying problem.
whenever I open a program it stays open for about 30
seconds then the application shuts down. The PC does not
close down totaly. Can anyone help?

Have you scanned your system for viruses using the most recent virus
signatures?

I have tried to run the virus program and also to run live
update but the program (norton 2000) shuts down after
about 20 seconds. is there any other way of checking for
viruses?

Norton AntiVirus 2000 is not compatible with Windows XP. You'll need to
upgrade to NAV 2003 (if you can find it) or 2004.

My Mistake I meant that it had Internet Security 2003
(2000 on laptop!)

Any other Ideas would be fantastic
