Programs running at startup

My XP system runs too many programs at startup. Most of these were downloads
that have somehow lodged themselves in the startup script. How do I control
what programs start to run automatically at startup?

Hello,

you can find and deactive programs using msconfig.exe -> tab "Startup".

First go into the individual program preferences and see if there is a
place to untick "start up with Windows" or something similar. If none is
found, Start/Run and type in "msconfig" without the quotes and then
click on the Start Up tab and untick anything you don't want starting
when Windows boots up.

Usually if you take a close look at the application in question, there is
often the option to "load at start-up" or not. Sometimes you have to really
dig around to find this option, as so many programs think they are so
important that they need to be loaded every time you fire up your computer.
This can lead to some ridiculously long boot times.

Using the msconfig utility will allow you to control what runs at startup
too, but is really intended as a diagnostic tool rather than a start-up
manager.

I hit the send button too fast.

To paraphrase MS-MVP Ken Blake who answers this question on a somewhat
regular basis, "it's not so much how many programs you have running at
start-up, but rather *what* they are". A good example might be if a lot of
your computer work is offline, and you seldom use the internet, you may
*not* want a firewall starting every time you boot. Choose carefully what
really *needs* to be there at startup to suit *your* computing needs.

My XP system runs too many programs at startup. Most of
these were downloads that have somehow lodged themselves in
the startup script. How do I control what programs start to
run automatically at startup?

Other people suggested looking at certain places to find which
programs are starting. This helps, but there are so many ways a
program can make itself start at startup that this way is not
practical.

This is NOT spam, I just use this freeware to get me out of your
position:

First step should be to check in the options for the program you don't want
to start and see if there is a setting to tell it not to run at startup.
The next step is to remove any entries you don't want from the two startup
folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

For anything else uncheck their entries in the startup tab of msconfig:
Start | Run | Msconfig | Ok

Another option is to remove the reference to them from one of these keys in
the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Make sure you have a backup of the registry using a program like ERUNT
before making any changes to the registry.

Best bet is to open the program and tell it NOT to start when Windows
Starts. The setting will be in tools, utils, etc.
