How can I stop the programs that run automatically at XP startup? How can I
set the programs to run automatically at XP startup? Thanks

Hii, type msconfig in [start menu > run] to go to startup and select
deselect ones u wish to enable or disable at startup autorun.
Now to add a program at startup u can drop the program shortcut into startup
folder. [start menu > programs > startup] done!

Hope this helps...,

Firstly you could check your startup folder this can be found in your start
menu under the all programs list.

Programs can also start from the registry, you can check that by using
MSConfig, click start followed by run, in the box that appears type
'msconfig' and press ok, click the startup tab to see what programs run when
your machine starts.

Ways to do that:

1. I recommend the program called 'autoruns.exe' from SysInternals
( www.sysinternals.com )
It can see ALL startups (even .dll files and .sys files).
2. Use regedit.exe (in start- run) (made by microsoft).

First step should be to check in the options for the program you don't
want to start and see if there is a setting to tell it not to run at
startup. The next step is to remove any entries you don't want from the
two startup folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

For anything else uncheck their entries in the startup tab of msconfig:
Start | Run | Msconfig | Ok

Another option is to remove the reference to them from one of these keys
in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Make sure you have a backup of the registry using a program like ERUNT
before making any changes to the registry.
