Programs launch for 3 seconds then disappear

Hi all,

Recently, I've noticed some programs will launch for 3 seconds, and then
just disappear after several seconds. I've stared at the task manager while
the process happens, and the app shows up and disappears. At first, I thought
it was just Apple programs (happens with QT and iTunes), but then it happened
with Bryce 5, and the Freespace 2 (game) installer. Other programs do launch,
such as IE, Firefox, etc. I'm completely at a loss for what happened. Can
anyone help?
