I have a few programs that automatically launch at start up and place
themselves in the system tray. The programs are not located in the start up
folder, how do I go about removing ANY program that starts automatically at
computer boot up.

Click Start > Run > type in: "msconfig" without quotes > startup (tab),
uncheck any unnecessary programs that might be starting up with the system
and restart.

In XP they call them "services" so you turn those services
off. Right click My Computer and select Manage. You should
see Service and Application in the folder panel. Select
Services and you can set services (programs to automatic,
manual, or disabled.
Also some programs can be set by clicking the icon in the
system tray and turning it off. Also when you install
programs, you may be given the option of the behavior.

First check the programs options/preferences for a setting to not have it
start on windows startup. If the program has no option: start, run, type in:
msconfig, hit enter, startup tab.

First, open each program that starts. Sometimes you can do this easily
by right-clicking on the program's System Tray icon. Look on the
program's toolbar for Settings, Preferences, or Options. Open those and
uncheck anything that looks like it will make the program start with
Windows. It is always better to set startup options from within the
program.

If you can't do this, then go to Start>Run and type (without quotes)
"msconfig". Look on the Startup tab for the unwanted programs and
uncheck the box next to each entry. Apply and OK out. You don't need to
restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll get a dialog box
saying you've used the System Configuration Utility. Check the box that
says, "don't bother me about this again".

On each program you don't want to start automatically, check its
Options to see if it has the choice not to start. Many can easily
and best be stopped that way. If that doesn't work, run MSCONFIG
from the Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the
programs you don't want to start automatically.

However, if I were you, I wouldn't do this just for the purpose
of running the minimum number of programs. Despite what many
people tell you, you should be concerned, not with how many of
these programs you run, but which.

Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you
should do is determine what each program is, what its value is to
you, and what the cost in performance is of its running all the
time. You can get more information about these with google
searches and by asking about specifics here.

Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent
informed decision about what you want to keep and what you want
to get rid of.
