Programs Don't Seem To Work

My mpeg files stop playing a while back. I can't see the file on any program
(Media Player, Movie Maker, DivX Player, Ulead DVD Player). The only program
that playes the mpeg files is my Pinnacle Studio ver.9. I noticed that I
could redo the small mpeg's as an avi file but large files bog the computer
down big time. This is the first time i'm using help and I hope some one can
tell me what's going on.

Pinnacle Studio ver.9 may have stolen the mpg/mpeg file association.

Open Windows Media Player | Tools | Options |
File Types tab | Click the Select All button |
Click Apply | Click OK

[[If you install other multimedia playback programs on your computer, they
may interfere with your Player file types settings. For more information
about setting file type ownership in other multimedia playback programs, see
the documentation that came with those programs. ]]

[[If you want to make another player the default player for a specific file
type, clear the check box for it in the File types list. ]]

[[If a selected check box is dimmed, Windows Media Player has only partial
ownership of the file type. Multiple file extensions are assigned to the
file type, but the Player only plays some of those extensions by default. To
give the Player full ownership of a file type, double-click the dimmed check
box. ]]

Start | Run | Paste this in the box and click OK...

No dice, I've tried all and nothing seems to work. If I reformat my hard
drive what will windows charge me to reinstall Windows XP?
