Programs disappeared from startup

Hi,

I was backing up my laptop to my desktop including my \Documents and
Settings folder. It seems I overwritten some files on my \Documents and
Settings on the desktop, and now when I click start>all programs> any program
it displays <empty> instead of the program name!

Any clues as to how to solve this problem? I have noticed that I can't
uninstall any of my programs now also as a result!

I beleive that you may recover the situation be using Syste Restore to get
back to a point in time prior to your mistake.
