According to their own investigation I have the latest version of Java
installed on my computer and yet I do not have any sign of it anywhere,
except in C:\Program Files\Java, but I do not know of a way of activating
it, so that I can use it.When it was suggested that I download a fresh
version I cannot do it because Java insists on searching my computer and
then tells me that I have the latest version installed. My questions are:-
1) Is there a way of activating this programme or 2)How can I remove it (at
present when I try to delete it, it informs me that I cannot do it because
it is protected) so that I can download and install a new version?

Download the latest version's offline installer:
http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Specifically:
http://jdl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=10778

And install it from the saved executable.

Are you sure it is not listed in the Add or Remove Programs control panel?

Thank you for the reply. Only the Updates were in the Add/Remove, but
although I removed those the Programme stayed were it was. I will try it
your way.
